Thank you for visiting the Phan Rang 35th SPS K9 page. Here is a brief description of Phan Rang: Phan Rang was located approximately 35 miles south of Cam Ranh Bay in the MACV II Corp on the East Coast of Vietnam inland from the South China Sea about six miles. Phan Rang AB (Air Base) was one of four "Stand Alone" airbases in Vietnam. A "Stand Alone" airbase means that the USAF was the controlling entity for all functions, hosting of other units/branches of service/allies, and provided primary security. However, the South Vietnamese Government owned the realistate! The geography and climate of Phan Rang was not the "stereotypical" perception of Vietnam (dense jungle, heavy rain, etc.). The area was arid and drought prone. Water had to be flown in on occasions. Building of the base began in 1965. It was closed in early 1972.
